Lead-in: Kubara mu Kinyarwanda 'counting in Kinyarwanda'

Introduce the lesson by counting different objects (including people) that are in and out of the classroom.  Proceed to show students some images of different objects and count them in their respective group.

For example:

  • How many people are in the classroom?
  • How may fingers and toes does one have?
  • How many chairs are in the classroom?
  • How many tables are in the classroom?
  • How many books are in a random student’s bag?
  • How many windows and doors are in the classroom?
  • How many lights are in the classroom?
  • How many computers are in the classroom?
  • How many classrooms are on this floor?
  • How many watches do we have here?
Procedure
Explain words and terms used in this section
Ask students to arrange the objects in the classroom in a certain order
Ask students to count the objects that are in the classroom.
Ask student to apply the addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication in Kinyarwanda.
