Summary: Counting, numbering, and telling time.

In this particular unit, the emphasis is on four important issues:

Firstly, when we solve problem we use ‘kongeraho’ for addition, ‘gukuramo’ for subtraction’, ‘gukuba na’ for multiplication, and ‘kugabanya na’ for division. We may choose to use either bingana or ni for the result in addition, multiplication, and division. For subtraction you may use either hasigara or ni.

Secondly, for the days of the week you should remember that they are based on the  agreement with class 2 word ‘umunsi/iminsi’. Hence, umunsi wa (ku wa).

For the months of the year, you should remember that they are based on the  agreement with class 9 word ‘ukwezi/amezi’. Hence, ukwezi kwa (ukwa).

For the year, you should remember that it is based on the agreement with class 2 word ‘umwaka/imyaka’. Hence, umwaka wa (uwa).

For the week, you should remember that it is based on the agreement with class 4 word ‘icyumweru/ibyumweru’. Hence, icyumweru  cya (icya).

Thirdly, The cardinal numbers agreement with the nouns they qualify are applied according to the three groups: -mwe; numbers 2 to 7; numbers 8-10.  However with class 3 & 6, cardinals change into different sounds (ebyiri, eshatu, enye, eshanu, esheshatu, and ndwi).

Fourtly, when you tell time in Kinyarwanda, you use partly Swahili words and partly Kinyarwanda words. i.e: saa kumi or saa cumi; saa enye or saa ine.  You should remember that the day start with the sunrise and ends with the sunset. It is not  like western day which ends in the middle of the night. Try to follow the clue given so that you may say time in Kinyarwanda correctly.
