Cultural Notes: The uniqueness in greetings

There is a unique and very popular way of greetings in Rwandan culture. When you greet someone and you mention his/her name, you must omit the last syllable. Example: Uraho Gasa… (for Gasana); Murabeho Muge… (for Mugema); Mwaramutseho Nyirahabima… (for Nyirahabimana); Wiriwe Kageru... (for Kageruka). Uramuke Mada... (for Madandi). Wirirwe Soni... (for Sonita). Alternatively, you may want to say the name in full, you must add "we" or "mwe" accordingly. Example: Uraho Gasana we. Murabeho Mugema we. Mwaramutseho Nyirahabimana we. Wiriwe Kageruka we. Uramuke Madandi we. Mwiriwe Anita na Sonita mwe.
