Cultural Notes

The lines of Rwandan family relationships may be extended to include a number of relationships created by the way of marriages according to Rwandan culture, unlike in Western cultures. On one hand, marriage relationships with the in-laws of the father’s and mother’s siblings. On the other hand, marriage relationships with the in-laws of their children and cousins. Family relationships may also be brought about remarriage as a result of death, separation, or divorce of either of the spouses. Thus, there would be other brothers and sisters from the stepping in process. The other family relationships may occur as a result of an unfortunate infidelity of either of the spouses. All the above get together and give support to each other as a family for any social event such as wedding, memorial and other celebrations.
