Cultural Notes: It is prohibited to say some family names publicly on account of respect.

In Rwandan culture, there are certain things which are not allowed to say publically or not to talk about them at all.  For example: you cannot say the male or female genital parts. Similarly, It is a sign of disrespect for a married woman to say or call the name of her father and mother in law publically. It goes to the extent that they can’t say the name of anything that has a similar spelling. For example:  Maria has a father in law whose name is Girinka, she will avoid to say the word “inka” (cow) because this word is part of her father in law’s name. She won’t say, nkunda inka but nkunda imbyeyi, or nkunda inyana. She will change her father in law’s name to be “Girimbyeyi” or “Girinyana”. This kind of high respect in Rwandan culture is called gutsinda (to give an exceptional respect to in laws).
